The NZDAA engaged Cosman Parkes to undertake a comprehensive review of the asbestos industry since the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations on 4th April 2016.
The scope of the report:
- To review progress of the Asbestos Industry in relation to the health, safety and wellbeing of their businesses and workers since the enactment of the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations on 4th April 2016 and
- To recommend a package of practical measures that will improve health, safety and wellbeing of business and workers in the performance of their work under the Regulations
Note: the Asbestos Industry includes, but is not limited to: those PCBUs responsible for workplace premises with asbestos containing materials (ACM), surveyors, licensed asbestos removalists and asbestos assessors, IANZ accredited analytical laboratories, health, safety and environmental consultants, hazardous materials transport operators, registered asbestos disposal facilities, regulators (including WorkSafe NZ, TLAs and others) and the officers and workers of those PCBUs.
Rob Barton, will be doing a short introduction about the NZDAA.
Then Rob will discuss why the NZDAA commissioned the asbestos industry report.
This will be followed by what the NZDAA will do with the asbestos industry report findings to implement positive change.
Mike Cosman will talk about his Asbestos Industry report for the NZDAA and the report recommendations.
Mike will talk about how the asbestos industry in New Zealand can move forward positively with the results from this report.
The presentation will take approximately 40 minutes, with 20 minutes for Q&A and discussions.

Rob Barton is the General Manager at ACM Removals Ltd. Since graduating from University in Canada in the 80s, Rob has had the opportunity to be successfully involved with different industries over the year. A career in medical/surgical sales representative, facilities manager, venture financing, as well as founder and CEO of his own marketing company in Canada. Since taking over the role of General Manager in ACMR, Rob has become familiar with all aspects of the asbestos industry, developing a growing company and getting involved with important industry outlets, such as NZDAA and FAMANZ.
Mike Cosman, Cosman Parkes Ltd.
Mike is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded health and safety practitioners with over 43 years experience in operational, management, policy and strategic roles. With an extensive regulatory background in the UK and New Zealand and having worked as a consultant to many of the leading public and private sector organisations over the last 14 years.
Mike is an independent member of a number of public and private sector health and safety governance groups and Chair of the Board of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management. He has an honours degree in management, postgraduate qualification in OHS, a Certificate in Company Direction from the IoD, is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH, Certified Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management and a Member of the NZ Institute of Directors.
