Managing Asbestos in situ (Strategy and best practices) 25 – 30 mins
Charles Pickles is an independent asbestos campaigner and founder / patron of Airtight on Asbestos. Charles has a background in asbestos consultancy. He co-founded Lucion Environmental in 2002, which at the time of his exit from the company in 2019, was the UK’s largest asbestos consultancy. With broad experience in the field and a firm understanding of the current risks and challenges presented by asbestos, Charles now highlights and campaigns for pragmatic solutions to asbestos issues.

Charles’s presentation brings together some of the best international “Manage and Monitor” asbestos strategies for clients. It draws from well-established international management strategies to facilitate well managed asbestos in situ. It is understood that the removal of all asbestos currently in place across the globe is not possible, so this strategy provides an interim solution that minimises the associated risk of asbestos fibre release occurring until such time the material can be removed from our buildings and infrastructure safely.

Asbestos Related works (training requirements) 25 – 30 mins
Alannah Elliott has grown her passion for asbestos management over a 10 year career. Starting out working mostly in schools for Hampshire County Council (UK), she felt the work she was doing was really helping keep people safe. She moved to Aotearoa New Zealand 5 years ago where she has built on her surveying, assessing and laboratory experience, plus she added soil analysis to her skill set. Training is where Alannah has really hit her stride though. Her aim is to spread awareness to as many people as possible. She explores using different platforms and delivery methods to reach a wide range of people. After all, asbestos awareness will really help keep workers and everyone around them safer.

Allannah will present on though Worksafe prescribes “Work involving asbestos”, clarification regarding “Asbestos Related works” defined as minor associated works “on asbestos containing material” not deemed to be friable for the purpose to provide a reference, “fibre cement cladding” having building washes, exterior painting and minor maintenance undertaken. What level of training is a “PCBU” required to give staff who are likely to undertake such work reduce appropriately the risk of asbestos exposure occurring.
