Who: The Course is suitable for persons who are:

  • required to survey buildings for asbestos as part of your work; 
  • considering a career in asbestos surveying; or
  • responsible for managing surveyors and surveying teams.
Outcomes: Asbestos and hazardous materials surveyors play a critical role in preventing exposure to asbestos. This qualification covers the knowledge and skills required to locate and identify asbestos-containing materials in buildings and provide advice to minimise the risk of exposure. IP402 Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings is the first of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) suite of international qualifications. The four course modules include:

  1. Introduction and good practice requirements 
  2. Asbestos in buildings 
  3. Risk assessments and management of asbestos 
  4. Bulk sampling and personal decontamination 
  5. Practical work 

Upon completion, course attendees will:

  • have an understanding of the requirements relating to managing asbestos in buildings
  • have an understanding of the wide ranging use of asbestos in buildings and the purpose of asbestos materials registers for communicating potential health risks
  • understand the requirements for the conduct if asbestos surveys and the compilation of a comprehensive asbestos materials register.
  • have a detailed knowledge and practical experience of the approved methods for sampling of bulk asbestos and regulatory requirements for sample analysis.
  • interpretation of sample results and an assessment of exposure risk.

Selection and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.

Format: Face to Face presentation, COVID – Safe practices, Extensive, relevant Practical Sessions, and casual discussion with practioners/lecturers, available after each session.

There is pre-reading and pre-course work . The practical assessment/demonstration will be conducted during the course with the two on-line theory assessments conducted on the Friday afternoon.

Evaluation: BOHS on-line practical written and theory short answer assessment, with BOHS result certification
