About the Event

Since 1986, the Johnson Conferences have served as forums for the discussion of asbestos issues. Held in the beautiful summers of northern Vermont, the Johnson Conference is being renamed the “Johnson/Rook Conference” in honor of Dr. Harry S. Rook, chair of the first eight Johnson Conferences.

To encourage forthright presentations and discussions of novel ideas and controversial issues, the Johnson/Rook Conferences have a tradition of no recordings, reports, or publications. As such, these conferences have generated lively exchanges of ideas that have shaped many of the asbestos monitoring methods and strategies used today. While the tradition of no recording will be maintained at this Johnson/Rook 2020 Conference, the publication of full papers will be encouraged for an issue of ASTM’s Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community, to be published after the meeting following peer-review of the manuscripts through the ASTM formal review process.

Scope

Detection, reporting, risk assessment, and regulation of asbestos and other fibrous minerals is as relevant today as when the first Johnson Conference was held. Abstracts that deal with these topics on a regional, national, or international level are solicited for the 2020 Johnson/Rook Conference.

Presentation topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Medical Research, Dose/Response, Toxicology, and Fate in the Body
  • Sampling, Exposure Assessment, and Risk Characterization
  • Regulatory Perspectives
  • Environmental Monitoring and Remediation
  • International and Domestic Analytical Methods
  • Soils, Talc, Natural Occurrences of Asbestos, and Vermiculite Products
  • Legal Aspects
  • Analytical Quality Assurance
  • Mineralogy and Nomenclature
  • Other Potentially Hazardous Elongate Particles

Who Should Attend

Professionals and laypersons with established as well as developing interests in asbestos who want to be informed of the latest information on asbestos issues will find this conference to be especially rewarding. This includes environmental consultants, laboratory analysts and managers, industrial hygienists, building owners, epidemiologists, toxicologists, land use planners and regulators, and federal, state, and local government officials responsible for making and reviewing decisions based on the findings of these studies.

The language of the conference will be English.

Publication

After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send publishing authors’ instructions via email. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online by September 1, 2020 at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Please note that only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date and passing the peer-review process will be included in the STP.

Technical Chair Contact Information

Additional information about the conference is available from Conference Co-Chairs Jim Millette, Millette Technical Consulting, Lilburn, GA at [email protected], or Jim Webber, Webber Environmental Health Consulting, Bend, OR at [email protected].
